Home Businesses that Really Work: First Be Prepared to Work at Home
By: Chris James

Operating a successful home business that fits you and your situation is life changing. You enjoy your work, reap the rewards of your labor and manage your own schedule with only a 30 second commute! It is wonderful when you find a home business and you are prepared for it! The first step is to consider the challenges you will face when you work at home.

One of the biggest changes is the physical location of your work. For some a first step is to try a working at home job. Those who have not done work from home often under-estimate the value of the being physically removed from:

Family: You will be working from home during times of family tension. It may be difficult to find a quiet place away from the cries of a teething baby, laughter of delighted children or the barking of a protective dog. Lifestyle may also make building a business at home challenging. Some people are continually available on demand family members. If this sounds like you, each family member, especially you, must learn that you cannot always be available on demand. If you are considering working at home opportunities, start setting aside time now (for paying bills, bathing, etc.) during which you are not to be interrupted.

Maintenance: When you are working from home, the drip of a leaky faucet can seem like water torture; the breeze through a window that needs re-caulking tempts you to a drive with the top down; the slipcover that needs straighten will take only a second, and suddenly the day is gone. Each item you once dreaded suddenly becomes demanding, enticing, and luring you away from building your new business! Before you commit to a home based business, go through your maintenance items, determine which items would be distractions once you are home and make arrangements to have those done.

Friends: Where your family might see the financial benefits of changing their ways, your friends may see this as a threat to their relationship with you. Before you begin a home business opportunity, consider your friendships and how they might change. Be open to discussing the changes with your friends. Ask for their support.

Habits: Finally, look at your habits at home. Are you addicted to video games or TV? Have you programmed yourself to "shut down" when you walk in the door? Are you continually snacking or smoking? If so, are you willing to change? Arrange a trial project similar to the opportunity you are considering to better understand what it might mean for you to work at home.

Building a home business is one of the fastest ways to the good life, but many fail to because they are not prepared. Don't let that happen to you.
